Quick Answer: Which LT Cable Jointing or Termination Kit Do I Need?
For a 1.1kV LT cable, select the kit by three things:
- ●Number of cores — single core (1C), or multi-core (3, 3.5 or 4 core use the same multi-core kit)
- ●Conductor size in sq mm — from 6 sq mm up to 1000 sq mm
- ●Termination or joint — a termination kit finishes the cable end at a panel, transformer or equipment; a straight-through joint kit connects two lengths of cable
- ●A breakout (spreader boot) that seals the crotch where the cores separate
- ●Insulating tubes for each core, from the breakout to the lug
- ●Sealing mastic / adhesive to keep moisture out
- ●Earthing components for the armour on armoured cables (as applicable to the kit)
- ●Distribution transformer to LT panel / feeder pillar — DISCOM networks in every state
- ●Buildings, malls, hospitals and housing societies — incoming LT feeders and rising mains
- ●Factories and industries — motor feeders, MCC and PCC panels
- ●Street lighting and EV charging stations — underground LT cable networks
- ●Solar power plants — inverter outputs to inverter-duty transformers (see our solar cable accessories guide)
- ●Fault repairs — joints on damaged LT cables after excavation damage
- ●Choosing by the neutral size on a 3.5 core cable — always select by the phase conductor size.
- ●Using copper lugs on aluminium cable without a bimetallic transition — leads to corrosion and hot joints.
- ●Leaving armour unearthed at terminations or discontinuous across joints — a safety and fault-clearing risk.
- ●Under-heating the outer jacket — the adhesive does not flow and water gets in.
- ●Jointing in wet trenches without drying the cable ends — moisture trapped inside causes failure later. Read more in why cable joints fail.

What Is an LT Cable Jointing Kit?
An LT (low tension) cable jointing kit is a set of heat shrinkable insulating and sealing components used to connect or terminate power cables rated up to 1.1kV (1100 V). LT cables carry power from distribution transformers to LT panels, feeder pillars, buildings, motors and machines — so they are the most widely used power cables in India.
A typical heat shrink LT termination kit contains:
A typical heat shrink LT straight-through joint kit contains insulating tubes for each core over the connectors, sealing mastic, an adhesive-lined outer jacket that restores the cable sheath, and components to maintain armour continuity across the joint.
Lugs and ferrules (connectors) are usually selected separately to match the conductor — confirm with your supplier when ordering.

| 6 – 16 | VLTT-01 | VLTS-01 | VLTST-01 | VLTSS-01 |
| 25 – 50 | VLTT-02 | VLTS-02 | VLTST-02 | VLTSS-02 |
| 70 – 120 | VLTT-03 | VLTS-03 | VLTST-03 | VLTSS-03 |
| 150 – 185 | VLTT-04 | VLTS-04 | VLTST-04 | VLTSS-04 |
| 240 – 300 | VLTT-05 | VLTS-05 | VLTST-05 | VLTSS-05 |
| 400 | VLTT-06 | VLTS-06 | VLTST-06 | VLTSS-06 |
| 500 – 630 | VLTT-07 | VLTS-07 | VLTST-07 | VLTSS-07 |
| 1000 | VLTT-08 | VLTS-08 | VLTST-08 | VLTSS-08 |
How to read the codes: VLT = VIKCHEM LT kit; T = termination, S = straight-through joint; an extra S after VLT means single-core (VLTST, VLTSS). For 11kV to 33kV kits, see our full kit selection chart.

3 Core vs 3.5 Core vs 4 Core LT Cable — Does the Kit Change?
In India, LT distribution cables are commonly 3.5 core (three phase conductors plus a reduced-size neutral) or 4 core (three phases plus a full-size neutral). For heat shrink kits, the same multi-core kit covers 3, 3.5 and 4 core cables of the same size band, because the breakout and tubes are designed for up to four cores. What matters is the phase conductor size — for a 3.5 core 240 sq mm cable, select the 240–300 sq mm band.
---
Aluminium vs Copper, Armoured vs Unarmoured
Aluminium or copper conductor: the heat shrink kit is the same, but the lugs and ferrules must match the conductor. For aluminium cables connected to copper busbars or terminals, use bimetallic lugs to prevent galvanic corrosion. Shear-head mechanical lugs and ferrules are a good option when crimping tools for large sizes are not available on site.
Armoured or unarmoured: most LT distribution cables in India are armoured (galvanised steel strip or wire). The armour must be earthed at terminations and kept continuous across joints. Unarmoured cables are common inside buildings and panels; they still need proper core insulation and sealing.

Heat Shrink vs Resin (Cast) LT Cable Joints
Both heat shrink and resin (cast/epoxy) joints are used on LT cables in India. Each has its strengths:
| Feature | Heat Shrink LT Joint | Resin (Cast) LT Joint |
|---|---|---|
| Energise after jointing | Immediately after cooling | After the resin cures |
| Shelf life / storage | Long; no mixing | Resin has a limited shelf life |
| Skill needed | Moderate — heating technique | Moderate — mixing and pouring |
| Wet / water-logged sites | Good when sealed with adhesive-lined tubes | Very good water blocking |
| Weight and handling | Light, compact | Heavier, needs mould |
| Rework | Easy to inspect | Hard to inspect once cast |
For most DISCOM, building and industrial projects, heat shrink LT joints are preferred for speed — the feeder can be re-energised quickly after a fault repair. For a broader comparison of technologies, read heat shrink vs cold shrink cable accessories.

Where LT Termination and Joint Kits Are Used

How an LT Heat Shrink Joint Is Installed (Overview)
Step 1 — Prepare the cables. Clean and straighten the cable ends, remove the outer sheath and armour to the lengths on the kit instruction sheet, and slide the outer jacket and core tubes onto the cables before connecting.
Step 2 — Connect the conductors. Fit ferrules of the correct size and material and crimp them with the correct die (or tighten shear-bolt ferrules until the heads shear).
Step 3 — Insulate each core. Fill gaps at the ferrules with mastic, position the core insulation tube centrally over each connection, and shrink it from the centre outwards with an even, moving flame.
Step 4 — Restore armour continuity. Connect the armour on both sides with the earth continuity components supplied, making firm, clean contacts.
Step 5 — Seal the joint. Position the adhesive-lined outer jacket centrally and shrink it until the adhesive flows at both ends, sealing the joint against moisture.
