Shear Head Mechanical
Lug & Ferrule
Mechanical cable lugs and ferrules with torque-controlled shear head bolts — no hydraulic crimping tool required. Available for aluminium and copper conductors from 25mm² to 630mm². Bimetal versions for AL-to-CU connections.
Overview
Traditional compression lugs and ferrules require a hydraulic crimping tool — heavy, expensive equipment that is not always available at remote sites or during emergency repairs. Shear head mechanical lugs solve this problem by using a set of torque-controlled bolts that clamp the conductor inside the lug barrel. When tightened with a standard spanner, the bolt head shears cleanly at the precisely engineered torque — providing a visual, audible and tactile confirmation that the termination is complete and correctly made. No guesswork, no over- or under-crimping. VIKCHEM manufactures shear head lugs and ferrules for the full range of LV and MV cable conductor sizes in aluminium, copper and bimetal versions.
Products Available
Shear Head Mechanical Lug
Cable lug with torque-controlled shear head bolts for terminating cable conductors to equipment terminals. When tightened to the correct torque, the bolt head shears flush — providing a positive visual confirmation that the termination is complete and correct.
Shear Head Mechanical Ferrule
Inline connector for jointing two cable conductors using the same shear bolt principle. Used in cable joints and repair splices where conductor-to-conductor connection is required without hydraulic crimping equipment.
Key Features
- No hydraulic crimping tool required — standard spanner only
- Shear bolt confirms correct installation — bolt head shears at specified torque
- Available for aluminium and copper conductors (25mm² to 630mm²)
- Bimetal versions for connecting aluminium cables to copper equipment terminals
- Tinned copper versions for copper-to-copper termination
- Vibration resistant — mechanical clamping withstands movement and thermal cycling
- Suitable for MV and LV cable systems
- Pre-filled with corrosion-inhibiting compound for aluminium versions
Applications
Remote Substations
Cable terminations in remote or rural substations where hydraulic crimping tools are not available on site.
Emergency Cable Repair
Fast conductor termination or repair when crimping equipment cannot be mobilised quickly enough.
Transformer Connections
Terminating large-section aluminium cables at distribution transformer LV terminals.
Switchgear Panels
Cable connections to MV and LV switchgear busbars and incoming terminals.
Overhead Line Repairs
Quick repair of aluminium overhead conductor connections at pole-mounted equipment.
EPC Projects
Large scale EPC cable laying projects where crimping tool availability is uncertain.
