Heat Shrink Jointing Kit
for XLPE Cable
Straight-through and XLPE-to-PILC transition cable joint kits from 3.3kV to 33kV. Installed in 60–90 minutes with hermetic sealing. IS 13573 and IEC 60502 compliant — accepted by DISCOMs, PGCIL and defence.
XLPE Cable Jointing Kits — Overview
VIKCHEM's heat shrink jointing kits for XLPE cables provide a complete, factory-engineered solution for connecting two sections of medium voltage cable underground. The kits use radiation cross-linked heat-activated polymeric components to recreate the complete cable insulation system at the joint — restoring full dielectric strength, screen continuity and mechanical protection.
Two variants cover the full range of XLPE jointing needs: the straight-through joint (XLPE-to-XLPE) for extending or repairing a continuous cable run, and the transition joint (XLPE-to-PILC) essential for grid modernisation projects where new XLPE cables are connected to existing PILC network sections. Both comply with IS 13573 and IEC 60502 and are accepted in DISCOM, PGCIL and MES tenders.
Voltage Range & Conductor Sizes
| Voltage | Conductor Range | Joint Type |
|---|---|---|
| 3.3kV | 35mm² – 240mm² | Straight-through (XLPE–XLPE) |
| 6.6kV | 35mm² – 300mm² | Straight-through (XLPE–XLPE) |
| 11kV | 50mm² – 400mm² | Straight-through / Transition |
| 22kV | 95mm² – 400mm² | Straight-through / Transition |
| 33kV (36kV) | 150mm² – 400mm² | Straight-through / Transition |
Kit Components
Stress Control Tube
Semi-conductive tube placed over each cable screen cutback to redistribute the electric field and prevent partial discharge.
Insulation Tubes (3 off)
One per core — radiation cross-linked polyolefin insulation tube with defined dielectric strength for each conductor.
Outer Protection Tube
Overall mechanical and moisture protection sleeve for the complete joint assembly.
Copper Screen Tape
Re-establishes cable screen continuity across the joint to maintain shielding integrity.
Self-Amalgamating Mastic Tape
Moisture-proof sealing at cable jacket transitions and screen re-bonding points.
Earth Braid / Ferrule
Earthing connection for cable screens. Conductor ferrules/lugs are typically supplied separately.
Key Features
- Hermetic sealing — no water ingress even in permanently submerged trenches
- Partial discharge free — tested per IEC 60502 type test requirements
- Fast installation in 60–90 minutes — versus 3–4 hours for traditional resin joints
- No curing time — trench can be backfilled immediately after jointing
- Covers both XLPE-to-XLPE and XLPE-to-PILC transition joints in one product range
- IS 13573 and IEC 60502 compliant — accepted by PGCIL, NTPC and state DISCOMs
- Available for single-core and 3-core cable configurations
- No special equipment — standard heat gun and hand tools only
